022: Kingdom Contours: Liminality & Communitas

Deep community doesn’t happen by comfort alone. In this episode, Brian Johnson continues the Kingdom Contours series with Jeremy and Monica Chambers to explore liminality and communitas—how risk, vulnerability, and shared mission form people into something more like family.

Liminality is the “edge” where you’re stretched beyond what you can control. Communitas is the deeper bond that forms when people face challenge together without escaping into isolation or cynicism. This is not easy work, but it’s often where movemental forms of Christianity grow strongest.

“Don’t believe the lie that you’ll ever get to a state of readiness.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Liminality: living at the edge of “just beyond you”

  • Communitas: deep community forged through shared risk

  • Friendship as the spark for movements

  • Storming → norming → performing (and why storming isn’t failure)

  • Tools for staying: fruit of the Spirit, humility, confession, repair
